What is Engineering?

Engineering is a science involving designing, building and usage of machines, engines and structures. Pursuing an engineering degree is a popular career option in India. With the economy opening up over the last two decades, the steady growth of industries in the last few years, as well as the addition of streams within engineering, students may have a variety of career choices.

Engineering Education

In order to secure admission to an engineering college, it is mandatory for you to have passed the 10+2 with subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics. Apart from these tests, top institutes such as Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) and Birla Institute conduct their own entrance exams separately. The importance of scoring well in the class 12 exam is evident, as about 40 percent weightage is generally given to it during admissions. The undergraduate engineering course is usually eight semesters, or four years, after which a student receives a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in the specified field chosen. Students looking to pursue a master's course in any chosen stream must either have a B.Tech. degree in the same field, or else have a specialized degree course such as a Bachelor's in Physics, Maths, Chemistry or Computers.


While the first and second year of your bachelor's course will likely have common studies, you need to opt for a specialisation after the completion of a few semesters. This is a decisive step, as not only can you gain in-depth knowledge in your chosen stream, your stream may determine career growth and the companies that could hire you.

Besides conventional courses such as mechanical, computers, chemical and civil engineering, newer fields are coming up that may increase opportunities for students pursuing engineering. These include applied mechanics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, instrumentation, metallurgical engineering, marine engineering and material science. Most courses necessitate minimum aggregate marks in class 12, with slightly higher scores in two or more subjects depending on the course. For instance, a course in computer engineering would likely require higher scores in mathematics and computers. Difference Between BE and B.Tech

Research has shown that engineering remains the most sought after under graduate course in India (this was published by the National Council of Advanced Economic Research). The many institutes that offer under-graduate courses offer either B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) or B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology). One of the most commonly asked question by engineering aspirants is the difference between the two degrees. Is it just a difference in the name/ nomenclature of the degrees or does the course curricula differ as well?

Difference Between BE and B.Tech Courses

The only difference that matters is this: "the B.Tech course is somewhat more practically intensive than the BE course which is more theoretical" The difference (which is quite minor) between the two degrees can be understood from their names itself, Engineering Vs. Technology. Engineering is a "science", dealing more with theoretical concepts & principles; technology deals more with the application of these theories for practical purposes. But, both B.E. & B.Tech courses offered by various engineering colleges/ institutes, have similar curriculum more or less. Both degrees are valued equally by prospective employers. What matters more is the reputation of the engineering college from where you obtain your B.E/ B.Tech degree.


  • B.Tech is offered by government institutes and B.E. is offered by private institutes. There is absolutely no truth in this. Institutes like Netaji Subash Institute of Technology, University of Mumbai (Department of Chemical Technology) which are government institutes offer a BE degree and there are many private institutes that offer a B.Tech degree.
  • No industrial training in BE or B.Tech In both, BE and B.Tech, industrial training is compulsory after semester 6.
  • B.Tech or BE is valued more than the other Your performance and to a lesser extent your college is what matters. Neither is preferred over the other.

How to Get Engineering Degree?

Engineering Entrance Exams

India has a large number of engineering colleges that offer a variety of different engineering streams/ specialisations. These engineering institutes are spread all over the country and are governed either by the state governments or the central bodies.

The admission to these engineering education and training institutions is largely done on the basis of entrance examinations conducted by the entrance examination conducting board of the state, country or the respective institutes.

The responsibility of successfully conducting these entrance examinations at different levels is jointly carried out by polytechnics, engineering colleges and universities in close cooperation with department of technical education and the designated government or other agencies.

There are two ways to enrol for a B-Tech program. First is you should have passed higher secondary schooling with Mathematics, Physic and Chemistry as your main subjects. After this you can join any collage by writing Entrance examinations. Each state have their own engineering entrance examinations. Or if you are a geek you better try for IIT's. Their are other better institutes to chose like NIT's, VIT, BIT's etc. For details you can go to their websites.

Other way is to do a diploma engineering after you 10th or 12th and then join for a BTech Programme. By doing this you can join the course from second year ownwards. In this method you can only choose the trade that you had done in your diploma.

If you join diploma after 10th and then go for a BTech you would just pass out like a regular BTech student of your age or your class. But if you go after 12th you put in an extra two years.
